Helpful Strategies for Developing Self-Confidence

Self-confidence does not mean perfection or being all-knowing. It means having faith in you, in your self-worth, your skill set, and your potential. For many, confidence is not a natural attribute, and there’s nothing wrong with that, because you can build confidence — one step at a time.

I would like to suggest a few strategies that have worked for myself and many other people to help build courage and confidence, especially when life feels uncertain or challenging.

1. Acknowledge Strengths

We all have strengths; sometimes we just forget them! Take a few minutes to write down all the things you believe you are good at, no matter how small. Are you a good listener? Do people trust you? Are you a calm presence in a crisis? When you know your strengths, it is easier to have faith in your ability.

2. Small and Realistic Goals

One of the easiest ways to build your confidence is by having small wins. Don’t try to achieve too much at once. Start small: finishing a task that you’ve been procrastinating on, speaking up in a meeting, or learning something new. Every time you succeed, you will feel a little more empowered.

3. Be Kind to Yourself

We often talk to ourselves in ways we would never talk to others. Be mindful and try to catch those negative thoughts. Instead of saying, “I’m not enough,” say, “I’m doing my best and I’m learning.” Positive self-talk is powerful! Be your own cheerleader.

4. Do Something New

Confidence develops when you try things that feel unfamiliar and uncomfortable at first! Always say yes to opportunities, even if it makes you a little nervous. Apply for the job, ask the question, give the presentation. You don’t have to be perfect to take action. Just showing up is a huge accomplishment.

5. Spend Time With Positive People

The people you surround yourself with have a significant impact on how you feel. Spend time with people who lift you up, who believe in you, and who remind you of your worth. Steer clear of people who put you down or make you feel small in any way.

6. Always Keep Learning

Learning allows you to feel a sense of progress, and progress builds confidence. Whether it’s a short course, a new read, or a new skill, every little bit counts! You do not need to know everything. Being curious and open is what is important.

7. Look After Your Health

The way you treat your body has an impact on your confidence. Eat well, get enough sleep, go outside, and move your body. Everything that affects how you feel as a whole, and when you feel good physically, it will be reflected in your mood and energy.

8. Don’t Be Afraid of Failure

No one is perfect all the time, and honestly, no one is successful without failure. If something doesn’t work out, it does not mean you aren’t good enough. It just means you are human. Learn from the experience and try again.

Final Thoughts

Confidence is not about being loud or a ‘look at me’ personality. Confidence is about believing in yourself — even when it’s hard. Just remind yourself of how capable you are, how far you’ve come, and the things you are continuing to achieve will, bit by bit, make you feel more powerful.
